about us
WHO WE ARE
The Broward County-wide Class of 1974 has reached a momentous milestone in our journey since graduating High School. Celebrating our 50th Anniversary is an amazing accomplishment that truly was orchestrated by God. Since 1974, we have demonstrated resilience through our faith. Proudly, we have withstood several US Military involved combats; a myriad of epidemics and pandemics; hundreds of national and local riots; protests; civil unrest; numerous hurricanes; floods and other natural disasters; major housing, gas, and food crises; the countless loss of family members, friends and classmates. Yet, we’re still standing strong, steadfast, and sure that the God we serve has planned, preordained, predestined, and positioned us for His purpose. As the Broward County-wide class of 1974 continues to lead, lift, and live to the fullest of our potential, may our collective legacy of faith, hope and brotherly love be a powerful force for change, compassion, and commitment.
OUR HISTORY
In 1974 there were approximately 20 High Schools in Broward County. Before the mid-70’s, most schools were noticeably segregated. The disparities in school conditions and resources were blatantly and woefully obvious, notwithstanding the landmark 1954 United States Supreme Court decision “Brown vs Board of Education,” which ordered the desegregation of Public Schools.
Nevertheless, almost twenty years later, a lawsuit had to be filed in Broward County to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling. Frederick Allen, a beloved member of the Class of 1974 was named as a plaintiff. The plaintiffs argued that the school district’s policies, including student assignment and zoning practices, contributed to the unequal treatment of African American students and limited their access to quality education. The case was part of a broader national effort to address the legacy of racial segregation in schools following the historic and precedential “Brown v. Board of Education” decision.
As a direct result of desegregation, the Class of 1974 spread its wings across Broward County with pride, prominence, and premier contributions to athletics, academics, and the Arts. Many of the Broward County-wide 1974 Classmates have made great achievements and left an indelible mark on our community and beyond.
